ABOUT CORAL PROJECTS

Coral Projects is a non-profit eco-contemporary art initiative, creating eco-friendly and ocean-friendly underwater artworks to support the rewilding or repopulation of  filter species such as corals, oysters and mussels in the world’s waterways and oceans. We work with marine scientist and protected regions around the world, such as the Oracabessa Bay Fish Sanctuary, Love the Everglades and local, underrepresented artists.

Coral Projects has three purposes:

1 — to create the first global underwater eco-contemporary exhibition! Our underwater sculptures feature emerging international, local, underrepresented artists. We use sustainable, ocean-friendly and eco-friendly materials that are permanently installed on the ocean floor. The artworks become sites for new reef and coral expansion, creating habitats for sea life. We expand where art is seen and experienced to the underwater realm sustainably and using eco-friendly and ocean-friendly materials.

2 — to promote progress in rebuilding the coral, oyster, filter species and fish populations, such as at our partner sites in South Florida’s Everglades, Southern Italy and the Oracabessa Bay Fish Sanctuary, while supporting the local communities and underrepresented artists.

3 —  to globally broadcast the successful modalities of ocean and earth stewardship and our model of contemporary art symbiotically living with the ocean life. Education on going green the easy way supports the health of the oceans and waterways, as well as, our species survival on planet Earth. It’s time for us all to align our actions with our ethics and create green and sustainable habits with eco-friendly consumption.

Coral Projects is an artist-run, site-specific art exhibition underwater. The motivation and urgency for the project is inspired by the rapidly deteriorating coral reef life along Jamaica's shoreline. Though this is a global issue, Coral Project's intitial inspiration came from visiting our first partner site, Oracabessa Bay Fish Sanctuary (pictured below) because of their massive milestones and community-minded work.

Coral Projects is the brainchild of Vanessa Albury. She believes art is a powerful catalyst for change and healing. Her background in science and passion for the oceans, curating, artistic practice, project management, art writing, sustainability and going green the easy way culminate in Coral Projects.

The goals of Coral Projects is to support the growth of corals, oysters and mussels in the oceans where they are in decline, inspire local communities to engage with contemporary art and the planet, and provide opportunities to artists to create work in a new context: under the sea!

With eco-contemporary art sculptures and art activism in collaboration with marine scientists and underrepresented artists, we at Coral Projects create the more beautiful, integrated and ecologically sustainable world we all deserve together.
